Why is this type of device needed?
Several police K9’s have perished inside patrol vehicles with currently available heat alarms installed. Ocu-Alert’s automated detection capability and Hot tone activation provides a fail safe method to prevent future fatalities.
My department does not have E-tone/Hot tone capability, will this product still benefit our agency?
The ignition over-ride and audible siren functions are beneficial, however, the dispatch notification function provides the lifesaving measures required to save the K9 in a time critical, life-threatening environment.
These are isolated incidents, why should we care?
As a result of this type of tragedy, it is estimated 12-20 police dogs are lost each year in this country due to heat exposure. Currently available heat alarms will not activate police resources or create the accountability the public is demanding.
Does this device replace a heat alarm?
Ocu-Alert can be used separately or in conjunction with other heat alarms. It also provides an additional anti-theft capability, locking the steering column and transmission shift select lever when the key is removed.
Will this product roll down the windows when activated?
Clinical studies have proven conclusively that the temperature drop from rolling down the windows does not significantly slow the heating process or decrease the maximum temperature. This function may prolong the suffering of the animal, but will do very little to save it’s life.
Why are there two separate functions?
Function I (ignition over-ride) is a preventative measure, to remind the officer that his K9 partner is still inside the vehicle, and outside temperatures are unsafe. Function II provides a secondary, lifesaving measure, which activates the audible siren and sends out a police radio E-tone. Dispatch notification will activate police resources and create accountability. The combined functions in one product will minimize the possibility of future tragedies.
What changes does this create for the handler?
Other than the piece of mind knowing that all measures have been taken to prevent K9 heat exposure, there are no known operational changes related to the installation of this equipment.
What would happen if the dog was left inside a non-running vehicle when the outside temperature is safe, but after a prolonged time, the temperature climbs to an unsafe level?
Ocu-Alert will automatically activate and engage the siren and E-tone function anytime a K9 is detected inside the vehicle in an unsafe temperature.
How are these components de-activated?
The Ocu-Alert components are activated from the moment they are installed, minimizing the possibility of human error. De-activation would require complete removal of the product.
Does this product integrate a remote activated door popper?
No, a door popper must be purchased separately.
Will these components void the factory vehicle warranty?
No, the factory wiring is left intact. These devices tap into the existing ignition, siren and radio circuitry.
When will these items be available?
Prototype testing and evaluation is completed and the product is available (please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery).
What about warranty?
Ocu-Alert is covered by a two year warranty for workmanship and material.
Purchased components carry their respective warranty.
