Product OverView

It has been estimated that 12 to 20 police dogs are killed every year as a result of police vehicle heat related exposures. There have been numerous occurrences of K9 fatalities, where a fully-functional heat alarm was installed and in good working order. Currently marketed products are commonly ignition key or switch activated, which allows for human error, and do not include presence detection capability. The standard heat alarm will activate the horn/siren, lower windows, and page the officer if the heat inside the vehicle climbs above a pre-set level, providing the unit is activated. It will not mobilize police resources, or create officer accountability.

HOW IT WORKS:

The Ocu-Alert system is activated when the K9 is placed on the pressure sensing mat, and cannot be adjusted or de-activated without complete removal.

Ocu-Alert Brain UnitThe primary function (proactive) provides vehicle ignition and accessory override capability. If the external ambient temperature is above 70 degrees, the engine and the air conditioning will continue running after the key is removed. This will prevent the handler from inadvertently leaving his K9 partner inside an unsafe, non running vehicle. The engine automatically deactivates when the dog is removed from the mat. Many studies have proven conclusively that there can be a 40 degree variance between ambient outside temps and vehicle internal temps within a very short period of time.

Ocu-Alert Floor MatIn response to this fact, internal vehicle temperature is also monitored (reactive). If the temperature inside the vehicle climbs above 90 degrees for any reason, the police siren will be activated. After two minutes, an emergency signal will be sent to police dispatch through the patrol car radio. This is the same signal received from any officer who needs assistance immediately. E-tone/Hot tone activation will inform the agency of the incident, activating resources and creating the accountability the public is demanding.

Police K9 handlers commonly carry two sets of car keys, allowing the handler to leave the vehicle locked and running with the dog inside. This condition would allow a suspect to break the window and steal the Police vehicle. The K9 partner is always locked in the back seat area, unable to stop the theft from occurring. Ocu-Alert allows the handler to leave the vehicle running without the keys, locking the steering column and transmission shift select lever, preventing the theft of the vehicle.

Ocu-Alert also includes a test switch, allowing the K9 handler to conduct routine testing and evaluation to ensure proper operation.
